Nellie's Coat

After seeing and studying Nellie's new coat (picture 7 in this ImageStation album) and comparing it to this picture from the old Samantha's Surprise book and this picture from Samantha's Surprise, I've concluded that there are enough similarities between the two for me to REALLY love Nellie's new coat. It looks so much like the coat that belonged to Samantha. The fact that the artist didn't render the coloring of the fur the same as the fur in Nellie's coat doesn't bother me. That artwork in Samantha's Surprise book was done a long time ago. The only real difference between Nellie's coat and Samantha's coat is the length and the fact that there is no fur along the bottom of Nellie's coat. The style of the coat is what I love most. I won't get much of Nellie's collection but will definitely be getting Nellie's new coat.

Julia, good call...you are very observant! I would also think, from looking at the graphics and photo you shared, they are similar enough to be the same coat.

Oh yes, Emily, I LOVE your site that has the comparisons of the old illustrations vs new. I don't know how many times I've gone to your site to look up this or that. Thank you for making that site!!! Samantha's Surprise is one of my favorite Samantha books so someday I'm going to track it down on ebay. My daughter used to have the whole set with case and gold bookmark but we lost it in a flood. We both fell in love with Samantha's story especially because of the the original illustrations.

That's what I thought right away when I saw it too, Julia! I don't like the fur on Nellie's as much, but oh well. This gives me hope that they ARE using the old illustrations as resources. There are some of Sam's dresses in the old illustrations that I would really like to see made for her!
